This classic Southern dish features collard greens simmered with smoked turkey for a hearty and flavorful meal.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 bunch collard greens, washed and chopped
- 1 smoked turkey leg (or ham hock)
- 1 medium onion, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 4 cups low-sodium chicken broth
- 2 tablespoons cider vinegar
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
Instructions
- Prepare the Greens: Rinse collard greens under cold water and pat dry. Remove tough stems and slice leaves into ribbons.
- Sauté the Aromatics: In a large pot, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add diced onion; sauté until translucent (about 5 minutes). Stir in minced garlic; cook for an additional minute.
- Add the Smoky Goodness: Insert the smoked turkey leg into the pot with sautéed onions and garlic. Pour in chicken broth and bring to a gentle boil.
- Simmer Those Greens: Add collard greens to the pot, stirring until wilted (about 10 minutes). Reduce heat to low, cover, and let simmer for at least 1 hour.
- Season It Up: After simmering, season with salt, pepper, and cider vinegar. Stir well before serving.
- Serve and Enjoy: Transfer collard greens to plates or serve directly from the pot. Pair with cornbread or fried chicken for a classic Southern meal.
