Macaroni and Cheese with Grilled Cheese Topping

Description

A delicious macaroni and cheese dish topped with crispy grilled cheese sandwiches.


Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 slices bread
  • 1/2 cup margarine
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded double cheddar cheese blend
  • 12 oz macaroni
  • 10 oz condensed cheddar cheese soup
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1 1/2 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 1/2 tablespoon onion powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/2 cup shredded Parmesan cheese
  • 4 cups shredded mozzarella and cheddar cheese blend

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400F.
  2. Spread the 8 slices of bread with margarine.
  3. Place 4 slices of bread, margarine side down, on a baking sheet.
  4. Sprinkle the shredded double cheddar cheese on top of the bread slices on the baking sheet.
  5. Place the remaining 4 slices of bread, margarine side up, on top of the cheese.
  6. Place the baking sheet in the oven and bake the sandwiches for 4 minutes.
  7. After 4 minutes, remove the pan from the oven and flip the sandwiches.
  8. Return the pan to the oven and bake the sandwiches for 3 more minutes.
  9. Remove the pan from the oven and set the sandwiches aside.
  10. Leave the oven at 400F.
  11. Cook the macaroni noodles according to the directions on the package.
  12. While the macaroni is cooking, dump the soup, heavy cream, garlic powder, onion powder, salt and pepper into a large mixing bowl.
  13. Whisk until all of the ingredients are fully combined.
  14. Once the macaroni is cooked, drain it and then dump the cooked noodles into the mixing bowl with the heavy cream and cheese soup mixture.
  15. Stir until all of the noodles are coated in the sauce.
  16. Add the shredded Parmesan cheese and 2 cups of the shredded mozzarella and cheddar cheese to the bowl and stir well.
  17. Dump the macaroni mixture into a greased 9 x 13 inch baking dish and spread it out evenly.
  18. Sprinkle the remaining 2 cups of shredded mozzarella and cheddar cheese blend on top.
  19. Place the dish in the oven and bake for 18 minutes.
  20. While the macaroni and cheese is in the oven, place the prepared grilled cheese sandwiches on a cutting board.
  21. Cut each sandwich into 16 bite-sized pieces.
  22. After 18 minutes, remove the mac and cheese from the oven.
  23. Sprinkle the grilled cheese pieces on top of the mac and cheese.
  24. Return the dish to the oven and continue baking for 6 minutes just to crisp up the sandwich pieces slightly.
  25. Remove the dish from the oven and leave the mac and cheese to sit for a couple minutes before scooping and serving.
  26. Enjoy!

Notes

  • You can use any type of bread for the sandwiches.
  • Adjust the seasoning according to your taste.
